Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the face

I didn’t say that – Michael Jackson did. Or was it Mike Tyson? Probably Mike Tyson.

The important thing is what it means to you when you read it.

Is he saying,

1. It’s pointless having a plan?

2. Life’s unfair and it punches you in the face?

3. You need to be able to adapt to change quickly when things go wrong?

Because I’m in the habit of wasting my time over-analysing everything, below is my take on it.

1. You need to have a plan. You’re gonna get punched in the face a whole lot more if you don’t. The guy assumes you have a plan.

2. Plan for getting punched in the face. Because you will.

3. Have a bias for action over planning. It’s the only way to find out where your plan went wrong and what your real options are.

4. When you do get punched in the face, you need to not only get back up on your feet, but also come up with a new plan on the way up.

Yup, this one was definitely Mike Tyson.

That’s why I love design thinking, it’s a lean method. It allows you to pick small battles with time boxed sprints and move quickly into action. You can adapt quickly and keep moving forward. It has an action bias. Have you given design thinking a shot yet? I’d love to know if you found it useful.

By the way, I really look forward spending time with Writaa users on our Zoom calls and talking to them about writing, publishing and life.

Drop me a line if you’d like to catch up some time. We’re still a small community and I’m glad I have the time to do this. I try and speak to at least 2-3 writers a week. It’s educational, thought provoking and inspiring. With the priceless bonus of making new friends in the community.

I look forward to meeting you soon.
